Caldwell County administers elections. Candidate filing for a party primary is handled by that political party; filing for a city, school or district office is handled by that political subdivision.

Filing for office
Where you file depends on the office you are seeking.
Party primary — county and precinct offices
File with the county chair of the political party whose primary you wish to appear in. The filing period and the deadline to apply for a place on the ballot are set in statute and published by each party.
City, school and district offices
File with the political subdivision holding the election — the city secretary, the school district, or the district’s designated filing authority. Caldwell County contracts to administer many of these elections but is not the filing authority for them.

A local political subdivision that wishes to contract with the Caldwell County Elections Department should email ElectionsAdmin@co.caldwell.tx.us.
Campaign finance reporting
Campaign finance law regulates the amounts and sources of money given or received for political purposes, and requires disclosure of political contributions and expenditures.

Local candidate reports
Campaign finance reports filed by local candidates with Caldwell County are public records. To request copies, contact the Elections Office on (512) 668-4347 or submit a public information request.
Political advertising
Political advertising in Texas must carry a disclosure statement, and there are rules about where signs may be placed.
Electioneering near a polling place is prohibited
No political advertising, and no expression of preference for or against a candidate, measure or party, is permitted inside the protected area around a polling place during the voting period — whether or not the subject is on the ballot.

A poll watcher observes the conduct of an election on behalf of a candidate, a political party, or a group of registered voters. Watchers must present a valid certificate of appointment and complete the required state training.

- A candidate on the ballot
- A political party with a nominee on the ballot
- Registered voters, acting on behalf of a write-in candidate
- The proponents or opponents of a measure on the ballot
